The challenge – To design a unique shape that combines current trends within the eyewear industry and celebrates the unique features of Morgan’s most iconic model. Working closely throughout the design process, the two companies are proud to introduce a unique design, named “The HFS”, available in a number of different colourways.
A Morgan, by very nature, has always been about a pure driving experience. A direct connection between man and machine, the open road and a sense of adventure are qualities that have stayed true throughout the 107 years of the Malvern based company. As part of a growing range of lifestyle accessories, all designed to enhance that driving pleasure, Morgan desired to create a unique pair of sunglasses. It was clear, they needed to reflect the cars in their design and stand out whilst remaining stylish, clear qualities of the company itself. Introduce the young and exciting British company, Taylor Morris…
Taylor Morris Eyewear was established in 2013 by best friends, Hugo Taylor and Charlie Morris. A fellow British company, Taylor Morris’ harmonious amalgamation of classical design with modern materials, innovative design features and fine craftsmanship made them an obvious choice for Morgan. The comparisons between Taylor Morris and Morgan were evident from the beginning of the collaboration and their hunger and desire to create a shape as iconic as the vehicles themselves was clear.
Working closely together, the Taylor Morris design duo and Jon Wells, Morgan’s Head of Design, drew inspiration for the sunglasses from period racing clothing, as well as specific elements on the 3 Wheeler itself.
The overall shape is based on traditional 1930’s racing goggles. Durable and tough, these goggles were worn by racing drivers the world over as they pioneered motorsport. The main inspiration piece for the frames was the Morgan 3 Wheeler. Influenced by the forward mounted engine positioning and perforated tail pipes, the designers have been able to draw direct comparisons between the frames and the 3 Wheeler, incorporating the main elements into the overall finished glasses.
Named after HFS Morgan who founded the Morgan Motor Company back in 1909, the unisex sunglasses are available in multiple colourways. The three frames are differentiated by the varying acetates used, inspired by the 3 most popular wood finishes, as well as the lenses inspired by the three most popular paint finishes. Other distinctive features are the brow bar, which is covered in leather inspired by Morgan interiors, and the Carl Zeiss CR39 polarized lenses.
